Career - Veterinary Technician

POSITION OVERVIEW

The veterinary technician is the doctor’s primary medical support person.  They assist throughout the exam, diagnosis and treatment phases.  They aid the doctor in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.  They have a significant role in communicating with the clients about their pets while furthering the mission of Covington Veterinary Hospital.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Greet clients and pets with a positive attitude, get basic history/reason for visit.
  • Get weights at every visit, vitals as needed.
  • Prepare necessary items for visit, be able to think ahead and anticipate doctor’s needs.
  • Input services from visit and update medical records with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • General nursing care, patient assessment, monitoring of hospitalized patients.
  • Tech exams, puppy and kitten wellness visits, vaccines,  
  • Administer medications via different routes (PO, SQ, IM, IV)
  • Administer basic first aid in emergencies.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance of equipment (laboratory, anesthesia, monitors, etc.)
  • Logging and inventory of controlled drugs.
  • Training of veterinary assistants and new technicians.
  • Other projects as assigned.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Confident in phlebotomy and IV catheter placement, can be in front of owners at times
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to take radiographs, including dental radiographs.  Ability to know when views should be retaken to meet positional and technique standards.
  • Technical math calculations and conversions.
  • Can perform animal restraint, in a manner that minimizes stress to the patient.
  • Monitor anesthesia, assist in surgery, knowledge of surgical hand tools and cleaning/autoclaving.

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Feel and express a genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal care environment.
  • Promote a Fear Free pet and client experience, in accordance with Covington Veterinary Hospital philosophy.
  • Deal intelligibly, pleasantly and efficiently with clients on the telephone and in person, often doing several things at one time.
  • Display tact and diplomacy with staff members and clients.
  • Show professionalism and maturity to other staff members.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multitask proficiently.
  • Be flexible in attitude and work habits.
  • Willingness to continue to learn and grow.  
  • Be able to pronounce, spell and know the meaning of commonly used veterinary terms.
  • Understand vaccinations, basic lab tests, common diseases and pet behavior.  
  • Able to use computer systems, word processing programs, email, web search and other skills needed to utilize the practice management software.
  • Work does require sitting or standing for extended periods of time, ability to safely lift up to 30#, squatting, and/or twisting.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of a Veterinary Technician Program
  • Passed State and National Boards (or scheduled to take them if recent graduate)
  • Licensed in State of Indiana
  • Previous Veterinary experience preferred, but not necessary.
  • Complete 2 hours continuing education per quarter – fulfill requirements for state licensing renewals.
